CIVIL WAR ERA INSCRIBED SILVER POCKET WATCH
Description: Fantastic Civil war Inscribed Silver Pocket Watch. Inscribe from Quarter Master Serg. Charles F. Brainard of the 11th Michigan Cavalry to Lieut. James D. Coffman of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry. The watch was made in the summer of 1864 by the serial No. of121082. It was made by Wm. Ellery. It was cased by S&J.M with a serial No. of 1336. Watch is currently not working. Second hand is detached. I haven't tried to find an individual to repair the watch. I'm sure it's not that hard to do. This watch just out of an ancient collection. Inscribed Civil War watches are fairly rare, But have you ever seen anything inscribed to The U.S. COLORED CAVALRY!? COLORED TROOPS ARE ONE THING, but COLORED CAVALRY? I'm sure the presentation has something to do with the Battle of Saltville on 10/2/1864 in Smyth County, Virginia. Both of these units participated in that engagement. Did Coffman save Brainard? More research to be done. Also known as the SALTVILLE MASSACRE. Confederate guerilla CHAMP FERGUSON and Confederate soldiers murdered wounded both white and black soldiers after the battle. Great Civil War history that doesn't come along to often. Definitely for the collector of Black Civil War History. Please call 973-214-3407 with questions. SOLD |
