Kelly Rowland got a royal introduction to the Duchess of Sussex when the two both attended Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour at Los Angeles’s SoFi Stadium this past summer.

In a recent interview with Hello!, the Destiny’s Child alum opened up about what it was like to officially meet Meghan Markle.

“It was my first time meeting her,” Rowland told the outlet. “It was just nice being there with other great women and being able to just simply talk.”

Besides Meghan and Rowland, Emmy-nominated actor Kerry Washington was also in attendance for the September concert. A photo of the trio, who had all worn silver in honor of Beyoncé’s birthday, soon went viral online.

The singer had an overall positive impression of the duchess. “I don’t know what people expect to see or to know, but she just felt very cool and very down to earth,” Rowland said. “She is very warm.”

Though Meghan married into the British royal family in 2018, Rowland says the duchess is royalty in her own right. “She was royal before she was in that family,” she said. “I think that we are royalty before anything. And we have to hold ourselves in that regard as humans, as people.”

Days prior to meeting up with Rowland and Washington, Meghan attended another Renaissance show with husband Prince Harry and mom Doria Ragland. Several fan-captured videos from the night showed the family dancing and singing along to Queen Bey.

Meghan and Beyoncé, who met for the first time at the 2019 premiere of Disney’s live-action The Lion King, have a history of publicly supporting each other. Meghan has long been a member of the Beyhive—even prior to becoming a duchess—and the Grammy winner has shared various tributes to Meghan online.
