Junipers are popular, evergreen conifers that are 100% maintenance-free plants that will grow almost anywhere. There are plentiful of varieties, each of which is suitable for a slightly different use.
Gold Cone is an attractive variety of common juniper from 1980 that was probably selected from an older variety named Hibernia. It has light golden yellow colour of newly emerging foliage in spring with good colour retention until autumn. Before winter, the yellow colour disappears and is substituted by blue-green and grey-green shades. New twigs have prominently orange-brown bark which contrasts well with soft yellow foliage. It is a reliable grower, making about 20 cm per year.
Grow juniper in any soil, including chalky, that is not boggy. It will tolerate drought. In early spring and midsummer it can be clipped or trimmed into any shape. It is fully hardy to -34°C (USDA zone 4) and suitable for outdoor pots.
