HITC Sport understands former Newcastle defender David Edgar is set to link up with Sunderland on trial.
Sunderland have invited former Newcastle defender David Edgar to the club on trial next month as they weigh up a move for the Canadian international, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Edgar has been playing in his native Canada for Ottawa Fury in the United Soccer League, which is the second tier of MLS, and he is available on a free transfer.
Sunderland boss Jack Ross is looking to bolster his squad in the New Year and he is keen to have a look at Edgar at close quarters next month to assess him.
Edgar would offer Ross versatility as he can play anywhere across the back-line and also in defensive midfield.
The 31-year-old is looking for a new club and is open to the idea of a return to the UK after starting his professional career at Newcastle.
Edgar came through the ranks at Newcastle, spending eight years with the club between 2001 and 2009, where he made 23 first-team appearances for the club.
The versatile defender joined Burnley in 2009 and he made 99 appearances for the Clarets during his five-year spell at Turf Moor.
He joined Birmingham City in 2014 with loans to Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United before moving back to Canada in 2016.
