Winona Ryder recently opened up about her past romantic relationship with Johnny Depp on the heels of the Alice Through the Looking Glass star being accused of domestic violence by his estranged wife, Amber Heard.
Ryder, star of the Netflix series Stranger Things, stressed in an interview with Time magazine posted online Monday that she could only speak of her personal experience with Depp, which was “wildly different” from the accusations Depp faces from Heard, who requested a restraining order weeks ago when she filed for divorce.
“I mean, he was never, never that way towards me,” Ryder told Time. “Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves. It’s hard because I feel like — that’s my experience. And it’s been a very long time.”
Ryder, now 44, was 17 when she first met Depp, she said.
Heard has accused Depp of getting physical with her on multiple occasions and produced photos of injuries allegedly created by Depp when she filed for a restraining order in Los Angeles in late May.
Depp’s attorneys said their client is innocent of all the accusations, which they accused Heard of fabricating for monetary gain.
Ryder stressed she was not implying Heard was lying about her situation and even talking about that couple’s falling out made her nervous.
“I’m just saying, it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it,” she said. “I just never heard anything like that about him. But, again, I feel like even saying that, I’m going to get death threats or something. I’m not on social media, so maybe I will be spared.”
