About This Product

Standing out from other Ti plants, 'Red Sister' sports flamboyant fuchsia pink to deep burgundy foliage, a sure way to brighten a room or add drama to an outdoor garden. The intensity of the variegated hot pink foliage color is influenced by amount of sunlight and growing conditions, and its brightest color comes when the plant is sited where medium or bright indirect light occurs in your home or office. A terrific easy going, low maintenance plant for beginner gardens, needing little more than regular watering, an occasional feeding, or perhaps a simple pruning. In warmer climates, this plant can be planted outdoors as a specimen, as a border hedge, or in a patio pot.

Highlights

  • Also known as cabbage palm or good luck plant, the shrub is often grown in some tropical locations to bring good fortune and to ward off evil spirits
  • Slow growing houseplant, low maintenance and perfect for first time gardeners
  • Eye catching leathery, lance-shaped, brightly colored leaves jazz up any home's decor
  • Easy going plant with simply frequent watering, light feeding, and basically no pruning
  • Tropical shrub that is outdoor hardy only in USDA plant zones 10-11, in all other climates, this plant is commonly grown as an indoor houseplant
  • Ships in a 10 in. tall and wide black nursery pot, the plant itself is about 20 in. tall
  • Performs best in an area with bright indirect sun, too much sun will burn the tips of its leaves
  • Grows best in average to evenly moist soils, will not tolerate extreme saturation nor standing water
  • Not particular to any soil type nor pH level

Q:How do you transfer a red sister Hawaiian plant to another planter
by|Mar 24, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Choose a tall pot because Cordyline like deep soil. Remove your Cordyline plant from the container it is currently growing in by squeezing the container with your hands to loosen the rootball around the edges, then very gently lift and remove it from its container, being careful not to damage the plant. If the rootball is stuck in the container, use some snips and simply cut the container away. After having removed the plant from the container, use your finger tips to gently loosen some exterior feeder roots around the surface of the rootball. Put a small amount of your soil mixture into the bottom of the new pot. Gently set the root ball of your plant into the pot. Make necessary adjustments by adding or removing soil so that the top edge of the root ball sits 1/2-1 in. below the container's rim. Backfill with soil all around the rootball, gently tamping the soil into place until the level of the soil is even with the top edge of the root ball. Water deeply after planting, adding more soil if needed.

Q:Do these plants grow back in the spring if cut down to the stem, or should they be replaced?
          by|Feb 10, 2022
          1 Answer
          Answer This Question

A:  The top growth of the plant can be cut off by using a clean, sharp pair of shears or loppers, leaving about 1 ft. of bare stem. The amount of stem left standing is not critical and may depend on what height you wish to maintain your plant. However, the timing IS crucial and it is best done at the start of the cool dry season, so the plant can remain dormant for a while and gather its strength for a boost of new growth when the warm weather starts again. Do NOT do this where you have a lot of cool season rainfall because the leafless plants tend to rot in wet ground.

The plant seems to have survived despite the VERY poor handling by the shipper. It almost seems the damage was intentional as no one could have done their job that badly accidentally
