A firetruck and car crashed and damaged three other cars Saturday at an intersection on the north side of Indianapolis, according to Indianapolis Fire Department spokesperson Rita Reith.

The crash occurred just after 1 p.m., when the driver of a black Honda Accord headed south on Delaware Street crashed into IFD Engine 22 headed west on Fall Creek Parkway.

The fire engine was on its way to a possible building fire when the Honda Accord approached the intersection. The man driving the Honda told firefighters and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers that he had his music turned up too loud and did not hear or see the firetruck until he was in the middle of the intersection.

Rieth said in a news release that the driver of the fire engine realized that the Honda was going to crash into it and detoured left to prevent a "full on T-bone collision."

When the car and fire engine collided, Rieth said, the engine spun and was pushed into the eastbound lanes of Fall Creek. The Honda veered into a grassy area on the north side of Fall Creek.

Three eastbound vehicles stopped at the light were damaged, one of which a 71-year-old bicyclist sought shelter under after realizing the fire engine was spinning toward the grassy divider at the intersection where he was waiting. No injuries were reported.

The intersection of Delaware Street and Fall Creek Parkway has since been reopened to traffic.
