This moss grows on unimproved grassland in the shade. The stem is reddish and only visible through the leaf bases, which sheathe it completely. The leaves are about 2.5 mm long and bent backwards to give the shoot tips a star like appearance. There are 2 very short midribs, which are hardly visible even under the microscope. The border of the leaf is finely toothed from tip to base.
