The front of a pickup truck is crumpled and burned after a head-on crash with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Tanker 29 (left) on Friday at Monument and McCormick roads. Engine 58 arrived to assist.

Witnesses to a head-on collision between a Jacksonville fire truck and pickup at Monument and McCormick roads pulled a victim from his Ford F-150.

Tanker 29, with its emergency lights on, was on McCormick about 1 p.m. when it began to turn onto Monument. That is when it collided with the pickup, witnesses said.

Corey Marrero said he was pumping gas at the intersection when he saw the accident. He joined some others in getting the injured driver out of his burning pickup.

"I was the first one there," he said. "I pulled him out with a couple of other guys. ... We just wanted to get him safe."

Although the Sheriff's Office and fire department hadn't briefed the media yet, the witnesses said the man was alert when they rescued him. His condition was unknown and it wasn't clear if the tanker driver need to go to a hospital.

The tanker truck also slammed into a utility pole in the median where it stopped. It was unknown if its sirens or air horn were used or what type of call it may have been responding to.
