Lesson learnt the hard way: Always buy Apple Care+ on your Macbooks! (this one is specially regarding the M1's; must-read) Yesterday, my co-founder's Macbook Pro M1 screen cracked while he was using it. Yes, sadly, 'while' using it. The screen developed a crack out of the blue, followed by random-coloured vertical artefact lines, followed by the screen dying off entirely after attempting to restart to see if it makes them go away (but in vain). Restarting the laptop killed the entire screen, and the crack was only illuminated and visible after the restart. So it was hiding behind all the lines. Plus, you can't feel any part of this crack with your nails; it is as if it's below the top layer of the screen. I researched. It seems that screens of M1 Macbooks randomly cracking is affecting many users [1]. Since most users do not buy Apple Care+ thinking that Apple products will never have issues, there is a high probability that they will need to shell out the repair cost if their M1 screen does crack (even if it's not their mistake). A lawsuit is ongoing in the US about the same [2]. According to the lawsuit, "[t]o enable the thin design of Mac notebook computers, the clearance between the display (screen) and the top case is engineered to tight tolerances" and cautioned users to handle the displays with care, the lawsuit says, contending this amounts to an admission by the tech giant that the M1 MacBook displays are faulty. As someone in tech, I understand that these things happen. But this screen cracking crossed my surprise threshold; this was the first time one of our Apple screens cracked while using the laptop. (Miss you, Steve Jobs) So, if you know someone who has recently purchased an M1 Macbook (there are these 20% off sales going on on the M1), and they are within six months from the purchase date -- I'd suggest buying Apple Care+ immediately. Because as you know, the bill for a screen replacement, out of warranty, with Apple is a considerable expense. #lessonslearned

Apple has a motherboard problem as well. Your device (laptop or iPad) can suddenly stop working one fine day (after the warranty has expired). And the cause: motherboard failure. And it costs a bomb (almost the price of a new machine) to replace it. After my first MacBook failed due to this, I started purchasing Apple Care+.
