Fostering inclusive narratives is paramount for amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups (URGs) within our society. Without such visibility, there is a risk that individuals from majority groups may overlook or discount the experiences of URGs, perpetuating a narrative of non-existence. To combat this, organizations must implement robust internal communication strategies aimed at showcasing the stories and experiences of individuals from URGs. By providing a platform for these narratives to be shared, we can challenge preconceived notions and promote a culture of inclusivity. "The fact that Ana Bailão is the only candidate who has brought attention to queer issues during an election that is taking place during #pridemonth2023 is staggering to me. At a time when Fae Johnstone, MSW the Executive Director of Wisdom2Action is petitioning the federal Canadian government to increase awareness about the rise in #hatecrimes against the #2slgbtqia community, this is not an issue that should be left off the docket. And as a #communication professional, not capitalizing on connecting with the queer community at this crucial time in the election is a missed #prstrategy tactic, and representative of how underprepared the majority of our candidates are. The next Toronto Mayor needs to be able to serve all #torontonians. Queer professionals bring diversity and equity to this city and deserve to be treated with respect. Canada is home to approximately one million people who are #2slgbtqia. We are educated, and we vote both with our wallet and on the ballot. The #2slgbtqia is made up of women, people of colour and gender-diverse individuals. Diverse companies are 70% more likely to capture new markets. (HBR). Diverse teams are 87% better at making decisions. (People Management). And diverse management teams lead to 19% higher revenue. (BCG). #Diversity is the future. #Equity is important. Even for the most seasoned of us, transnational convening spaces can be very complex and political. Often we are torn between, picking what side events to attend, what panels to listen to and catching those side meetings which leaves us burned out most of the time. The political nature and power dynamics within these spaces often affect the meaningful/active participation of #young #activists who most times are first timers and unaccompanied in these kind of spaces, even though they have gotten a scholarship by the organizers or being sponsored by a bigger partner organization. A lot of young feminists embodied this kind of experience at #WD23 But, when organised properly, (because we have seen it) these spaces provide #rest and respite, a place to build connection and community, to collectively strategise and advocate, and spark cross- movement #collaboration.
