The SSC Ultimate Aero TT

Few know the legacy of Jerod Shelby, an engineer - no relation to Carroll Shelby - who founded SSC in West Richland, Washington, with the intention of building classy supercars to rival the better-known, established brands that dominate the market. After years of design and development, the Ultimate Aero was born: a car that became the world's fastest production car on 13 September 2007, reaching an average top speed of 256.14 MPH on a paved road in rural eastern Washington state - a record later broken by the Bugatti Veyron at 267.856 MPH. SSC then produced the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, a car that reached a speed of 273 MPH, as proven in NASA's wind tunnels in Langley, Virginia. It must be remembered that the SSC was a bargain compared to the Bugatti, costing less than $500,000 when new. The SSC Ultimate Aero TT offered here bears the serial number 004 and is one of 24 cars produced between 2006 and 2007. The super sports car is powered by a mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged 6.3-litre V8 engine with an output of 1,183 bhp and 1,484 NM of torque, which is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. This is offset by a weight of just 1,247 kilograms due to the lightweight construction with carbon fibre. This results in a breathtaking power-to-weight ratio of only 1.039 kg/hp. By comparison, the Bugatti Veyron generates 1,001 hp and weighs 1,597 kilograms. Thanks to these astonishing figures, the 4.475-metre-long, 2.100-metre-wide and 1.092-metre-high SSC Ultimate Aero storms from a standstill to 60 mph (96.56 km/h) in just 2.78 seconds. The dynamic power athlete masters the quarter mile, famous in the USA, in just 9.90 seconds. In the cockpit, a speedometer, a rev counter and instruments for measuring water temperature, oil pressure and fuel provide the driver with the most important information. Other standard features include air conditioning, electric windows, electrically adjustable mirrors and a navigation system. Entertainment is provided by a 10-speaker Audi/CD/DVD system and a 7.5-inch monitor. To enable the Ultimate Aero TT to park more safely, SSC equips the super sports car with a reversing camera.
