Jonas Armstrong has quit as the BBC's Robin Hood after being inundated with big money offers.

Heart-throb Jonas, 27, will hang up his bow at the end of the third series.

Bosses of the drama, watched by up to eight million, promise "a nail-biting series finale" but will not reveal if Robin lives or dies.

A BBC One insider said: "Jonas might be leaving but there is every intention for a fourth series. We don't want to give away what happens yet, but it will be explosive."

Series three returns early in 2009 with Robin older, tougher and hell bent on revenge following the murder of Maid Marian by Gisborne.

Talking about his decision to quit the biggest role of his career, Jonas said: "Playing Robin Hood has been an incredible experience."

Foz Allan, Executive Producer, added: "Jonas has been a superb Robin Hood, reinvigorating it for a whole new generation."
