Lily Allen has dished on the start of her romance with husband David Harbour - jokingly declaring that their entire relationship is "based on a lie".

The Smile singer, 39, and Stranger Things actor David began dating in 2019, thanks to meeting on celebrity dating app Raya. The famous pair tied the knot in style the following year, marrying in Las Vegas in September 2020 with Lily's two children from her first marriage in attendance.

But despite the happy couple seemingly moving very quickly and walking down the aisle within two years of first meeting, Lily has now revealed some secrets about a not-so perfect start to their relationship.

Speaking on the latest episode of her BBC podcast, Lily and co-host Miquita Oliver, 40, discussed how dating has changed over the years and the difference between American and British singletons when it comes to rules and ethics while looking for love.

"I'm not really a massive dater," Miquita admitted as she discussed an upcoming date she may have to cancel due to illness. "I don't think you were either," she went on to recall to her long-time friend. "David was the first date I ever went on," Lily then revealed to listeners.

"I remember googling when I first started seeing David 'how many dates are you meant to go on before you sleep with someone?'" Lily continued to confess. "There was different answers depending on whether they're English or American. I think English was five and American was seven dates."

Lily and Miquita went on to chat about past sexual encounters and dating cultures, with Lily admitting she would get drunk in a pub and go back home with people during her drinking days. The singer-turned-actress, who is five years sober, then admitted if she was ever single again, she would use an app targeted towards sober singletons in order to match with someone also teetotal.

Towards the end their chat, Lily then revealed she thinks her now husband was seeing other women when they first started dating back in 2019. "In America, you date multiple people and that is dating and I think that's quite a new notion to us," Miquita mused, to which Lily replied: "It's also acceptable to be dating several people at the same time!"

The Dreamland actress then recalled: "I think when I first started dating David, he was doing that! I remember saying to my therapist at the time 'I think he's seeing other people...'" Laughing, Lily added: "And I was like 'and I think I'm okay with it?'" Miquita then asked: "But if you asked him, would he have said 'yes, I am currently dating'?"

"Yes, but I wouldn't want to ask the question," Lily admitted to her childhood pal. "That was way too vulnerable for me," she sarcastically quipped, with Miquita musing: "It's because we're English." Lily continued: "I remember us talking about it on a date and I was like 'totally fine, of course' and I think he was attracted to me pretending to be fine with it."

Jokingly, Lily then quipped: "So our whole relationship is based on a lie." Laughing, Miquita corrected Lily: "Based on *that* lie that continued throughout."

Lily and David currently live together in New York with Lily's daughters Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 10, from her first marriage to Sam Cooper. Speaking on a previous instalment of the Miss Me podcast, Lily explained how having children impacted her music career and admitted becoming a mum "ruined" some aspects of her working life.
