U-995 TYPE VII C submarine

The U-boat Type VII C was the main combat unit of the German U-boat arm in World War II, carrying the bulk of operations and achieving most of the successes. It was employed mainly in the North Atlantic against allied convoys. The U-boats built and commissioned at later stages had minor improvements not only in the shape of the hull but also in the armament, in particular anti aircraft defense. There were forms of the conning tower with considerable variations, such as more and enlarged platforms for AA guns, accommodation of snorkels.

Type VIIC/41 was a slightly modified version of the successful VII C and had basically the same engine layout and power. The biggest difference was that these boats had a stronger pressure hull giving them more depth to evade attack under (operational 120m and crush depth at 250m against VIIC's 100/200). They also had lighter machinery to compensate for the added steel in the hull making them actually slightly lighter than the VIIC. Wwith all the benefits in range and fuel/battery consumption. A total of 91 Type VIIC/41 were built.

Today one type VIIC/41 still exists in the form of U-995 which is now on display at Laboe (north of Kiel) in Germany. She is also the only surviving type VII in the world.

This primarily wood model of the U-995 type VIIC/41 submarine is 38" long. It features real nails and all hand-cut, hand made parts, a feast that can only achieved by ModelShipMaster.
