Cardhu was first run by John and Helen Cumming, who ran their illegal still alongside their legitimate farming venture. The whisky world’s answer to Bonnie and Clyde, this boozing power couple ran quite a successful little venture down there in SPeyside. It looks like Helen was the one running the show most of the time. She even developed a clever system to alert other illegal distillers in the area of an impending raid by the authorities. If she saw any inspectors around, she would hoist a red flag up the flagpole, alerting others with their illegal stills to hide away. This kind of entrepreneurial spirit is what makes Cardhu a standout to this day. Cardhu 12 Years Old is a 100% pot still whisky. This golden oldie comes from the 1960s or 1970s. It has a nose of apple, pear and smoke with a lovely palate of sweet peat and curls of smoke. The finish is long with a little malty touch.
