Description of Wings of Fury
Wings of Fury is a fun, albeit repetitive, action/simulation game in the style of old side-scrolling classic Sopwith.
You fly an F6F Hellcat fighter, and your task is to escort a damaged aircraft carrier to Allied shores. After launching from the carrier, you will shoot your machine guns, torpedoes, and bombs at the Japanese fighters. You will also have to sink enemy ships.
The game is a lot of fun, mostly owing to ease of controls, decent graphics, and no-nonsense action. The game has some nods to realism, in that you must land on the carrier to reload your guns or refuel your tank from time to time. In contrast to earlier (e.g. Apple II) versions, you can even save game whenever you are on the carrier. The plane is easy to control, and downing one enemy plane after another is strangely addictive.
Unfortunately, Wings of Fury suffers from the same weakness as Sopwith: lack of longevity. The game becomes boring once you play it for a few hours, because there are only five missions in total-- mission six is the same as mission one, but with more enemy planes, so on and so forth. Launching off the aircraft carrier is also quite frustrating, especially to beginners (heed the technical notes below-- you will not be able to launch your plane without using slowdown programs for this one).
It's still a great game, but only for the few minutes or hours that it will take you to see all five missions. Top dog, with some reservations.

@QUADER is right, if you configure DOSBox for a Tandy machine with Tandy sound, you get the digital sound effects plus graphics that are more or less equal to EGA. This is probably the best way to play the DOS version.
The high-pitched squeak when taking off is due to an interference from the SoundBlaster with the Tandy DAC emulation. As stated in the DOSBox manual, you should also change "sbtype=none" in the config file, and then you get perfect sound with no problems.

Spent many, many hours on this when I was a teenager.
Not long ago (Can't remember when, may have been one year or two ago) I downloaded the remake of this game from elsewhere.
I walked out disappointed.
But the other day I downloaded it from here and gave it ago on DOSBox.
It's incredible how after ~30 odd years I still remembered a few things about it.
How to take off, how to bombard the shelters and how to cook the little peeps with waves of machine gun.
But my memory isn't that good after all, because I forgot how to gracefully land on the carrier.
Anyway, I concur with the other commenter that says it runs to fast, maybe turn down a few CPU cycles on DOSBox is that becomes a problem?

After looking at the directory which clearly has soundfiles i looked at the box on Moby Games which states Tandy...
So i configured Tandy as Graphics Card/Computermodel and enabled Sound for Tandy in Dosbox...well, guess what, there is Sound.
Don't be shocked, the first Sound when Starting the Plane makes a "squeek" but then it runs like charm. When looking at the Soundfiles again i think one could be the Title Music and the Crack screwed it up...someone manipulated the wings.exe
Maybe someone has the Original Disc to make an Image of it and share with us :)

Snadstra: I guess you ran WINGS, you need to run either WOFC if you want CGA graphics (you don't!), or WOFE for EGA, much better.
Controls: arrows to move, Return to drop bombs or fire rockets, depending on what you selected at the carrier, and Space to fire machine guns.
Anyway, you're all better off installing an Amiga emulator and playing that version: by far the best graphics and - especially - sound.

I can't get the PC version to run on DOSBox, what's wrong? I get the splash-screen to press any key, when I do that it returns me to the prompt...
