FHP: Man critically injured in head-on crash with fire engine in Ormond-by-the-Sea

Authorities said a sport utility vehicle driving recklessly crashed head-on with a Volusia County fire truck in Ormond-by-the-Sea on Monday afternoon.

A man troopers said was driving recklessly was critically injured when his sport utility vehicle crashed head-on with a Volusia County fire truck in Ormond-by-the-Sea on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash occurred at 12:04 p.m. at Ocean Shore Boulevard and Sandra Drive, dispatchers confirmed.

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Kim Montes said the SUV, a Chevy Tahoe, was traveling northbound on Ocean Shore Boulevard and the fire truck was traveling southbound when the vehicles collided.

Witnesses said driver of the Tahoe, a 51-year-old man from Mallory, West Virginia, was driving in an aggressive and careless manner just before the wreck, Montes said.

The SUV crossed into the southbound lanes and struck the fire truck head-on.

The driver of the SUV was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach in critical condition, Montes said.

The driver of the fire truck, a 25-year-old man from Deland, suffered minor injuries, Montes said,

Authorities said preliminary reports indicate the three firefighters riding in the fire truck were not injured in the crash but were transported by a battalion chief to the hospital for medical evaluation.

Paramedics transporting the man extricated from the SUV said he was suffering from a cut to to the forehead and injuries to his chest and abdomen. 

The crash remains under investigation, Montes said.
