Giants’ reported QB interest is underwhelming, ex-NFL MVP says

There’s a serious chance the Giants will use their first-round pick later this month to draft Daniel Jones’ heir-apparent. But will one still be available at No. 6?

The Giants likely will need to trade up if they want to grab a top quarterback. Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reported on Friday that NFL sources familiar with the Giants thinking believe that North Carolina’s Drake Maye “could most entice the Giants to make a blockbuster move up from No. 6.”

Speaking on WFAN on Monday, Boomer Esiason was not too excited about the idea of the Giants drafting Maye.

“I’m not totally overwhelmed by him,” he said, via Audcay. “I don’t feel like he jumps off the page to me. Maybe they’ve met him and liked him and feel like he’s gonna be one of those guys like J.J. McCarthy where it’s all football all the time.

“This also could be a smokescreen to get Washington to take Drake Maye.”

There have been reports of the Giants interest in Maye, who was 269-of-425 for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions for North Carolina in 2023.

Jones, 26, signed a four-year, $160 million extension with New York last offseason, but 2024 is his final year of guaranteed money. He dealt with neck injuries and later a season-ending ACL tear, resulting in him making just six starts.

The 2024 draft begins April 25.
