Police: Delivery van driver in critical condition after hitting Bensalem fire truck head-on

A delivery van driver is in critical condition after their vehicle struck a Bensalem fire truck head-on Thursday morning.

Bensalem Director of Public Safety William McVey said the van was traveling in the westbound lane of Street Road between Knights and Hulmeville roads, near Popeyes, when the vehicle went into the eastbound lane and struck Bensalem Fire Engine 222 about 10:40 a.m.

The two firefighters in the truck were able to extricate the delivery driver after the crash. McVey said they were treated for minor injuries. The fire truck was totaled in the crash.

The department said the two firefighters used the "Jaws of Life" to cut the man, a 22-year-old from Philadelphia, free from the vehicle. He was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

The public safety director said the fire engine was going the normal rate of speed at the time. The firefighters were not responding to an emergency incident when the crash happened, he said.

Street Road between Knights Road and Hulmeville Road was closed until about 3:30 p.m.
