Warsaw, Poland - Polarsteps

A worthy monument to the men, women and children who joined the Home Army to revolt against the Nazi occupation. So here's the story: After WW1, Poland was a flourishing nation. In fact it was called the "Paris of the East" back then. Then came hitler. Sept 1, 1939, he and his posse invade and occupy Poland. The atrocities they committed back then were unspeakable. There were about 500,000 Jews in Poland before WW2. After, about 30,000 were left. The rest? Watch the movie, Schindler's List. August 1, 1944, they're finally fed up and revolted ("Warsaw Uprising"). After two months they lost. :( Hitler, angered by the uprising, ordered the bombing and execution of the Polish people. They literally lined up people along walls and shot them. They placed explosives inside buildings, systematically going block by block, and blew up the buildings. They only stopped when Germany already surrendered. The aftermath: almost 200,000 Polish people, most civilians, were killed. And 85% of Warsaw was destroyed. The Germans literally leveled the city.
