Who was Frida Kahlo?
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist of Mestiza heritage born in 1907. Throughout her life, Kahlo was passionate about social justice and Mexican politics. She was particularly invested in exploring issues related to cultural and ethnic identity, colonialism, gender, and class in Mexican society. Kahlo initially studied science at school and planned on becoming a doctor. However, her dreams were derailed when a car crash left her permanently disabled at the age of 18. During her recovery from this accident, Kahlo returned to her childhood love of painting and produced several works while on bed-rest between 1925 and 1927.
When her bed-rest was complete, Kahlo re-entered society and joined the Mexican Communist Party in 1927. It was here that she met her husband, Diego Rivera with whom she spent the next ten years of her life travelling through Mexico and the United States. Fully-integrated back into society and travelling frequently, Kahlo’s artistic sensibility and signature style developed in full. Her main source of inspiration was Mexican folk culture, which she blended with elements from pre-Colombian and Catholic mythology in her paintings. Kahlo's first solo exhibition was held at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1938. The following year, Kahlo held an exhibition in Paris. Thereafter, the Louvre purchased her painting The Frame, making her the first Mexican artist to be featured in their collection.

Kahlo's style has been position within Surrealism and the South American tradition of magical realism. It is well known that Kahlo was influenced by Mexican folk art which often evoked fantasy, naivety, and a fascination with violence and death. The latter makes sense considering that the artist’s declining health was often a focal point in her work.
Her work, more than anything, was about refusing categorization. Her paintings were characterized by a combination of reality and fantasy, flattened perspective, and clearly outlined characters rendered in bright colours, which have all been reiterated and repurposed by current artists whose work is currently for sale. Original Frida Khalo paintings are rarely available for purchase as almost all her known works are held in public museum collection. However, her work continues to inspire generations of artists whose art is currently for sale and which you can bring home to enjoy for years to come.
