6.7M quake in Tonga Islands

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Honolulu has recorded a 6.7M quake at a depth of 247km, 134km northwest of Tonga.

An earthquake with a preliminary recorded magnitude of 6.7 has struck in the Tongan Islands on Sunday evening.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Honolulu has recorded a 6.7M quake at a depth of 247km.

The quake struck 134 km northwest of Neiafu, Tonga at 10.28pm.

"Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake," says a Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre spokesperson.

The United States Geological Survey says an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck the Neiafu reion in Tonga.

"There is no tsunami danger," says the US Tsunami Warning System.
