Sir are you sure about stock brake pads? I am on my fourth set, max to max they can last around 80-85k KMS that too if you drive conservatively. Even tyres do not have that much life.

I'd suggest you to get them replaced, and are you sure about brake pads and not brake discs?

Re: Highest reading on the odometer!

Mine has done 422,000 km. Shocks and clutch replaced once. Engine not opened at all. Oil change with Castrol Edge every 15.000 km. Oil filter changed every 30,000 km. Wheel bearings still the same that came from the factory.
It is a 2002 VW Multivan 2.5 TDI with a 5 cylinder engine.

I am not entirely sure about the brake pads, The car was driven in the hills till 50k km's and thereafter only on the plains by my dad(a very sedate driver). When I went for wheel alignment recently, I saw ATE markings in the brake pads. These were used by VW in their OLD cars, So I assumed that the brake pads were still stock.*

The FNG said that the brake pads need a replacement, I can also feel the reduction in the brake force so I will be replacing the pads in this service.

On a side note, we also have an Ameo TDI which has run around 45k km and had its brake pads replaced at the 35k mark.

Re: Highest reading on the odometer!

Sharing a pic of an Uncle's 1996 Omni, from Puttur, Karnataka. I was properly introduced to him in 2017. I learnt then that he was a big DIY guy. Car maintenance & detailing, home improvement, even tailoring, an ex-Bulleteer and an avid reader. He would have been a perfect fit member of this forum.

Back then I noticed his decently maintained Omni. The nut that I was, I forgot to take a pic.

Sadly, he passed away last year in May'21 due to a sudden heart attack. We all were shocked. As I said, he was a big DIY guy and a very active person, in his mid 60s. I was staying in Mangalore at that time. But there was no way I could attend the funeral, due to strict lockdown.

Went to meet his family later in October'21. I'll be honest, I never felt so sad and regretful for a relative's passing. Probably first because he was around my Dad's age. Plus our interests. Cars, DIY, home improvement, and now even I am into motorbikes. My aunt even said he was so ocd about cars being clean, that he would even wake up early morning and wash a visiting relative or family friends' car.

Can't imagine the bonding we could have developed had he been around now and I had been in Mangalore full time, which I intend to in the near future.

Sharing the odo and the Omni's pic. Sorry for the bad pic, that's the best I could manage, considering a little lack of space, and it being dark.

Odo stood at 706536 KMs in Oct'21. His elder daughter got the fitness done in September 21, and it's good to go till 2026. One wouldn't believe how well maintained it is for a 25+ year old car.

That's a very well maintained car indeed. However regarding the picture of the ODO, the last digit on the right represents a tenth of a KM. The actual reading in the picture would be 70,653.6 kms. That said, the meter "resets" to 0 after every Lakh kms. So the actual number of KMs done by the car would only be known to the driver/owner of the car.

Oh. I had no clue. Thanks for that.

His job profile included more of travelling around. Am sure it must have been reset a couple of times.

Cars and bikes in those days were only marked until 99999.9, the odo will then turn 00000.0. So the odometer shows 70653.6 not 706536. There is no way to guess how many lakh have run.

It is not uncommon to see old timers from 1 or 2 generations ago to hold onto cars for decades. Buying and maintaining cars were an expensive affair for incomes back then. The mileage raked up was also relatively slower than what we see today.

Re: Highest reading on the odometer!

Happy to share milestone achieved on my humble Ritz VDI last week in 8 years 8 months. The honour went to Pune Nashik highway. As you can see from time, i have carefully driven car in leftmost lane and stopped on left side before taking these pictures. Driven Ritz for 1800 plus kms in 6 days thereafter without any problem. I have no plans of selling it even if I plan to buy a new ride in near future.

Re: Highest reading on the odometer!

So I am in Dubai on a holiday to spend some time with my Dad who works in National Taxi(one of the many taxi companies in Dubai) and today I saw a 2018 Camry Hybrid with this

The surprising(not for my dad or the mechanic) part was this car has never been though an engine overhaul. This Camry has probably been through another 200,000kms according to the mechanic.

Re: Highest reading on the odometer!

I was watching a YT vlogger’s video in which he travels on a Volvo B9r bus of Kallada travels between Hyd and Bangalore.
He takes a video of the instrument cluster of the bus when it had stopped for a break. It is a 2016 manufactured bus that had run close to 14 lakh kms!

What you missed to mention or notice is that the check engine light is ON.

Time for a inspection and rest days for this workhorse!

I actually asked him about the engine check light and he said that it's to do with the Hybrid system of the car with a couple of the battery modules not having enough voltage and not charging properly, I can't go into detail as I am not technically sound.
