Hacksmith Real-Life Alien P-5000 Power Loader
Fans of the Alien movies are most likely familiar with the Caterpillar P-5000 Powered Work Loader. It’s essentially a mechanized exoskeleton used for lifting and moving heavy objects using hydraulic claws similar to those found on forklifts. How does it work? One joint of each claw is placed under the package, while the other one is used to clamp down on top of it. The Hacksmith managed to build a real-life version of this exoskeleton.

Straight away, you’ll notice that there are no legs on The Hacksmith’s version, but rather a tracks instead, as it was built atop a skid-steer loader. It retains the original hydraulic power unit to run the upper body hydraulic cylinders, which stays true to the movie version, as plasma-cut steel sections were fit with a tab and slot system before welding them together. These arms have five degrees of freedom, all of which are controlled by proportional hydraulic valves, but the power loader receives commands from an industrial-grade Raspberry Pi-based control system. The coolest feature is that the pilot can use either flight controller joysticks or a PS4 controller to control it.
