Bought Used MSI RX 470 4gb Miner Edition card to Flash VBios, No detection

I just received a used MSI RX 470 4gb GDDR5 Mining Edition DVI-D single display port graphics card and am trying to flash the vbios and turn it into a usable budget gaming card for my nephew. Has anyone come across this problem while flashing an RX 470 Mining card or a mining card in general? Upon boot up I started up GPU-Z and found that both Windows and GPU-Z do not detect the card but labels it as a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

Shortly after this I supposedly "successfully as stated by the ATIFlash utility" flashed it to a gaming bios as per the link VGA Bios Collection: MSI RX 470 4 GB | TechPowerUp and directed by the seller, using ATIFlash 2.9.3 I still came up with the same problem as before: no detection of the device and the video card being labeled as an ATI Radeon Polaris 10 in the ATIflash utility.

As of right now I'm going to try to install the latest drivers and see if that affects anything. I'll be updating this post with every troubleshoot I attempt.

Edit: After updating drivers

So far I've:
  • Switched PCI-E ports with a functional graphics card, all are functional.
  • Updated the drivers to latest release of Radeon Adrenaline 21.5
  • Uninstalled the drivers again and installed Radeon Adrenaline 19.9.1
  • Uninstalled all graphics drivers through DDU, No change beyond reverting back to Standard VGA Graphics on GPU-Z
  • Flash bios through a boot drive, No change
  • Installed multiple other unverified BIOS of the same version and model, unable to flash vbios of other cards models of the same memory type (SSIDs Mismatch), no change
  • Ran the atikmdag pixel clock patcher to patch memory clocks, only detects low resolution limit and can patch, nothing else though.

You need to open the card and make a picture of the memory modules , you need a vBIOS with support for the memory inside your GPU.

The memory modules are Samsung brand.
We need the exact model because different models have different timings etc.

Edit: What has the best chance to work is a vBios with the same Device Id , Subsystem Id (sometimes works flashing with different a Subsystem id) , same video output ports (sometimes works if at least containing the ports on the GPU) and the same memory modules. (if same brand its even better , sometimes gpus can have different type of PCB)

Right, right. Opening it up I've found the thing was absolutely filthy and will be repasting and dusting in the meanwhile.

The memory modules are hardly legible but this is the best I've got.

The bios you flashed had the right memory but eh it doesnt work all the time.

You can try this : (yes you can try the 570 too.)

Samsung K4G41325FE

This memory is available with 4Gbps and with 8Gbps:

K4G41325FE-HC25 4Gb 128M x 32 8.0 Gbps 16K / 32 ms 170FBGA Mass Production
K4G41325FE-HC28 4Gb 128M x 32 7.0 Gbps 16K / 32 ms 170FBGA Mass Production

Some more to try, the vbios doesnt show the exact memory type so i think you can only try and see if it works unless someone here knows exactly what vbios has that type of memory.

Sadly I'm getting SSID mismatches from all of these bios both in the GUI flash and the DOS flash utilities, the only ones that are installing are the MSI RX 470 bios with Samsung memory but even then those don't fix the problem of GPU-Z missing information as posted in the OP.

Are you using the DVI-D port on the mining gpu?

Yes, it's the only port available to use.
Ok so you get the screenshots using that port on the mining gpu then. Good to know because some mining cards have no functioning ports

Are there any white/black stickers/barcodes on the gpu? If there are Id like to see the specific gpu you are dealing with

That bios flash has wrong ram contained in it

Wait a sec is the heatsink an armor?

The bios you flashed had the right memory but eh it doesnt work all the time.

Samsung K4G41325FE

If the card has that heatsink from the ebay ad then...
These are the Last of the Mohicans

2016 bios
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/189090/msi-rx470-4096-161103

2018 Bios

The rest are 2017

I suggest you shut down and reseat that gpu in a pcie 16x slot (top slot), not on a riser cable.

Download atiflash/amdvbflash 2.93
Go here https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ati-atiflash/

Then look for Version 4.68, underneath 4.68 you will see a link to show older version, click that and you should see version 2.93

Then

Follow these steps carefully:

1. Open your "C:" drive in Windows, create a new folder, call it atiflash.

2. Extract the contents of atiflash_293.zip to the "C:\atiflash" folder

3. Find the bios file you downloaded and rename the bios file to biosname.rom

(Biosname.rom is just an example, change it to match your card model in 5 characters with .rom on end)

4. Move biosname.rom to the "C:\atiflash" folder

5. Open the start menu, type cmd, when cmd.exe appears right click it and hit "Run as administrator"

6. At the command prompt type in cd\ and press enter until only C:\> is on the screen.

7. Type in cd/atiflash and press enter, you should see C:\atiflash>

8. At the C:\atiflash> prompt type in
amdvbflash.exe -unlockrom 0
(there is a space between the e and -unlockrom and 0)(0 is the number zero)
press enter and you will be prompted that the "ROM Unlocked"

9. At the C:\atiflash> prompt type in
amdvbflash.exe -f -p 0 biosname.rom
(there is a space between the .exe and -f, and a space between -f and -p and 0)press enter.

Follow directions on screen and if flash is successful exit the command prompt and restart, windows should show up on screen.

@Tycoh

If it still doesnt work return that card as defective(do not mention anything about bios flashing it) and Find a brand new unopened RX 6400 or RX6500

Ok, well check back

@Tycoh you trying?
Yeah, tried it out and it's still unchanged. I'm assuming the card itself may be defective but I'm gonna try to flash it on a friend's computer to be sure. It'll be a day or so until I can get to it though.

Yup its always a crapshoot with mining cards, it's why I don't bother with them.

You have a better chance of finding a Vega 56, RX 5500, or even a RX 6400/6500 working.

Yep, will do. My friend will be free in a few days so I'll just be searching for other alternative methods of repair and probably other graphics cards that would be appropriate for a teenage nephew's first gaming rig.

Ok a RX 6500 at minimum or a RX 6600 is where I would start.

My first dedicated GPU was a Herculese 3D Prophet 2 GTS Pro 64MB back in 2001/2002.

My friend who works at a tech thrift shop got back to me and said the card is defective and isn't even worth the time to try to fix. Pity.

Yup never buy mining cards
