W1zzard - The man behind ATITool

MigoNet did an interview with W1zzard recently.

"The man behind ATITool" reveals his ideas, inspirations and future plans in a interesting interview. If you want to know where the inspiration for several projects, available on this website, came from, you should take a look at this interview.

Without him this site wouldn't exist and probably a good amount of video cards wouldn't show their full potential.

His most impressive project, ATITool, is well known in the overclocking community and is well appreciated.Everyone who ever tried to overclock a ATI Card "succesfully" has most probably used ATITool to achive his goal.

The recent beta version of ATITool even supports NVIDIA cards and we hope it will find its way to the NVIDIA users who will hopefully appreciate this great tool.

Exploit OSX and earn $500

Wil Shipley, independent Apple software developer, has offered a $500 bounty for anyone who can exploit a base OSX install with the latest security patches. It's time to put up or shut up.
I'm going to offer a bounty of $500 to the first person who can prove that a Mac running Mac OS X (version 10.0 or greater, and patched to the latest security level available at the time from Apple) was accidentally and detrimentally infected with a virus that exploited a flaw in the base Mac OS X installation (not, say, Microsoft Word) before September 20, 2005. The definition of "virus" will for this contest will be either a virus or worm as described by the wikipedia. The challenge ends at 23:59:00, October 16, 2005 (which happens to also be my birthday, and by the way I have a thing for nice shirts).

Bye bye single core Xeon

Intel introduced its last single core Xeons, a low voltage 3Ghz model and a 3.8Ghz model. In addition they also introduced a 2.8Ghz model with 2MB cache. In the coming weeks Intel will most likely introduce its dual core Xeon nicked Paxville. Paxvilles dual core technoligy will be less crude than the Pentium D, it will have a simple arbiter so the system recognizes the CPU as a single one, this will make sure it works on the current boards.
Unfortunately Paxville will have a relatively short life, next year it will be replaced by Sossaman, a dual core server chip based on the Pentium M.

ASUS 7800GTX-DUAL Card Final Design

"This is how the final design of the ASUS Extreme N7800GT-DUAL box and card will look like. Apparently ASUS chose to use a red PCB and a nice cooling solution with a fan in the center to cool down the two GPUs. This card uses 1.6ns GDDR3 memories with a total of 512MB onboard. The overclockability of this card is pretty decent reaching 489Mhz core and 1389MHz memory and scoring 27203 in 3DMark03 and 11138 in 3DMark05 using Athlon 64 4000+ processor. Interestingly ASUS only produce 2000 of such cards."

ASUS PhysX Card Ready

"Here's a pic on how the PhysX card using AGEIA PhysX processor from ASUS will look like. In comparison with the reference card, there are some differences in the PCB and components layout. Now the PhysX card looks more like a graphics card with 128MB onboard GDDR3 memories, a heatsink fan to cool the PPU and also a 12V Molex connector for additional power source. The PPU is made on 0.13 micron technology and contains 125M transistors. Upcoming game titles like Unreal Tournament 2007 featuring Unreal Engine 3.0, Bet on Soldier: Blood Sport, Dogtag, Sacred sequel will be able to support AGEIA physics technology. BFG will be making the PhysX cards too and is slated for this Christmas release."

Maybe this is the begining to a new era of video cards... Sounds pretty interesting I wonder if it would do as well as lets say a 7800?

Microsoft Turns 30

Yep, Microsoft is middle aged.It turns 30 this week.

Founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975 to port a BASIC language interpreter to the newfangled microcomputers (what PCs were called at the time).

You either love or hate it ... or both.

Sure, Windows freaked us out at least a dozen times, but where would we be without it ?

To celebrate, Microsoft reorganized into three divisions: Platform Products, Services, and Entertainment each with its own president.

Intel invests 345 million dollar in chip factories

One week ago it became obvious that Intel has delivery problems with its chipsets because the maximum capacity of the present factories is reached. Now, the Californian will invest 345 million dollar in two older American chip factories.

The money flows into the Fab17 in Hudson (Massachusetts) and in the Fab23 in Colorado Springs where a new clean room will be installed. In this Fab, the 300-mm-wafer coming from other places will be processed. Within one year the additional capacities are supposed to be operationally, hundreds of new jobs are expected. About 300 jobs are expected in Hudson.

The development team of the Itanium in Fort Collins (Colorado) extended through the employment of new workers and the purchase of new offices.

Forceware Series 81 drivers leaked

Well NVIDIA is putting further pressure on ATI with its new Forceware 81.26 (beta). An Austrian site HardwareOC.at has benchmarks on the new drivers, and shows speed improvements across the board. Firefox on CNet's Top 10 Products List

As Firefox busted the 90 million download mark (according to SpreadFirefox), it has been rated #5 on CNet's top ten products over the past ten years.

This is in part of the fact that Firefox has been the first web browser to post a serious threat to Internet Explorer since they monopolized the market in 1999. It is also because of this that Microsoft had to rethink the abandoning of making new standalone versions of IE.

Ahead of Firefox are the illegal version of Napster (4th), Google (3rd), TiVO (2nd), and the #1 on the list is the iPod!

NVIDIA G80 To Use GDDR4 Memories

Looks pretty good, less power and less cost and better performance. Looks like the prices might not sky rocket either.

"GDDR4 will start working at the similar speeds of top GDDR3 chip but it will use less watts and will be easier and cheaper to produce. This memory should start around 800MHz efficiently 1600 MHz if not even higher. However GDDR4 will be different from GDDR3 as it requires some memory controller modifications so older cards should not be able to support it. The first chip that will be using this memory is Shader Model 4.0 NVIDIA chip known as G80."

Opera turns 8.5 and completely free

Opera is a web browser that, out of the box, offers a full set of functionality. It was always available for free, but the free versions had an ad banner built into the program. Not any more!

The 8.5 release of the browser is available for free and still has all of Opera's features (3.6MB download for Windows). In my opinion Opera trumps Firefox in features and usability - most "must have" extensions for Firefox are in Opera. It's probably available in your native language too.

Most X800 GTO Cards Can't Be Unlocked

Here's an advice from our colleagues at VR-Zone. After the HIS X800GTO review at HKEPC it turned out that most X800GTO cards that are retail now can't be unlocked successfully. For the present only Sapphire X800GTO cards like the Ultimate and Fireblade editions using the X800 GTO² (R480) core can be successfully unlocked(we have the modification article here), X800 GTO² is only made exclusively for Sapphire. Don't rush out and grab a X800 GTO card because most likely you can't unlocked it. ATi has changed method of identifying and locking from 2ID to 4ID so it will be more difficult to alter the BIOS or perform hard mod.

Cross off Crossfire on your shopping list for now…

Once again, Josh at PenStar Systems has put his fingers to the keyboard to enlighten us some more about what might be making the soon to be released Crossfire product look so gloomy. This time around, he explains that it is most likely the compositing chip holding the Crossfire back. He feels that ATI likely had to make "compromises" with the frame buffers to get things to work and that the design "limits users to the undesirable resolutions and refresh rates that we are currently seeing on CrossFire setups." He also points out that there is a solution to all of ATI's woes which would involve ATI producing it's own compositing engine featuring 10 MB of E-DRAM.

ATI caught in the Crossfire

Josh over at Penstarsys.com goes through a lot of trouble trying to make sense of what seems like a doomed ATI product. He writes that with a few "tricks" of the trade, the Crossfires shouldn't be as limited as NVIDIA and others make them out to be. The article tries valiantly to put ATI Crossfire in a more favorable light, but admits finally that Crossfire is "essentially a knee jerk reaction to SLI" and that "NVIDIA's SLI is more flexible." Lastly, "CrossFire has not been released yet, and SLI in its present state is a far cry from what it was when introduced nearly a year ago." ATI is playing catch up, but this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. It's going to take some time.

Geforce 7800 details

The third Geforce 7800 based card will have 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders. The core will be clocked at 375Mhz and the memory at 1Ghz, which probally means that it will have 2ns memory chips. The standard 7800 will replace the 6800GT and 6800 Ultra. Now lets hope the price will reflect the fewer pipelines and slower speed.

Maybe two of these will be faster than one GTX, and maybe even at the same total price? Assuming you play SLI enabled games of course.

ATI CrossFire is capped at 1600x1200 @ 60 Hz

Indeed the subject heading is true.

For the people that don't know how CrossFire is setup, it is simple: There is a Master edition card and an ordinary Radeon card, an external dongle will connect the two cards together and be joined to one plug which goes into the monitor. To coordinate the two cards to communicate through the dongle, the Master edition card uses the SiL (Silicon Image) 1161 chip which receives the output passed over the dongle from the Slave to the Master.

Now read the specs for the SiL 1161 and you'll see that the maximum negotiable resolution and refresh rate is 1600x1200 @ 60Hz due to it being a single link TMDS.

UPDATED: I just received some news that 1920x1200 is capable but at a rate of 52 Hz. Thanks DarkSaber for the heads up!

The controller is the Revolution

It's a bit shocking but refreshing to see Nintendo's new controller design. It is shaped like a TV remote control but gives you control over console games like never before.

One part you hold in your hand and another part goes on top of your TV to act as motion sensor. The Revolution controller detects motion in 3 dimensions and has a pointer - sort of like the old "light-guns" back in the day of the original NES - that gives you as much or more percision as a computer mouse. Don't worry, it works much better than the old light-guns. The controller gives you the percision of a keyboard and mouse but at the comfort of a console controller. Read more for pics and links.

Some people are just so lucky. Jeremy Reimer over at Ars Technica recently was invited to tour Valve HQ in Bellevue, Washington, and comes away with news of Valve's exciting High Dynamic Range rendering technology.

The article goes into some of the finer details of lighting in games and provides for some stunning images of Valves upcoming games. It's a long read, but well worth it especially if you're a fan of Valve and into game development.

NVIDIA Tforce

NVIDIA plans to release it's new chipset on the 27th of this month - one day after ATI's release (see below). According to the Inquirer, we are going to be treated to new integrated graphic cores - Tforce 6150 and 6100. A touch faster than the ATI Radeon Xpress 200, each core should have 2 pipelines.

Sam & Max will get a sequel, again

While lucas arts cancelled their sequel to Sam & Max a small company named Telltale made a deal with Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell. Unfortunately nothing is known as of yet, thoug the game will be similar to Telltale's Bone games.
It couldn't be said enough that this will not be, or based upon, LucasArt's Sam & Max: Freelance police, it will be a completely new game.
Let's hope some new information is released soon, personally I can't wait for it.

New Windows Vista features

Microsoft previewed a new feature in Windows that can increase the speed applications are loaded and extend the virtual memory of a computer system by accessing secondary and peripheral storage devices such as USB Flash memory sticks. It's called "SuperFetch" and can reduce boot times to about 80 percent. It's going to run in background as an application and will be available in the final version of Windows Vista. More details about the new technology will be available during the PDC in this week and there're goind to be more examples how this thing works.

Day of Defeat: Source preloading and ordering begins.

Day of Defeat is a WW2 FPS class based online game by Valve. It has been highly anticipated since it was added to Steam's "Coming Soon" list almost a year ago. For existing Steam users who have bought DOD:S (through Half Life 2 Silver or Gold Steam packages), you can start downloading all the data, 627MB, needed to play the game now. The game will be made playable/released on September 26, 2005.

There is a 10% discount off the $20 price if you preorder through Steam before the game is released (VAT not included in price). Screenshots can be found here.

Flock

When you put Bart Decrem, and a small team of programmers together, of which some are former Mozilla Foundation members (including Decrem), something good is bound to happen. These guys brought us Firefox, and based upon that same browser they are bringing us the future in a Web 2.0 browser called Flock.

This October should see the first beta of Flock, the "social browser" that understands that "Web 2.0 is a stream of events, people and connections." Flock will be open source and cater to the power-browser. Can you say Greasemonkey ?

Read all about it here.

NVIDIA and ATI – a dog eat dog world

So even if we have the 7800 now in all it's flavours, NVIDIA is still bringing us 6800s in 2 versions: a PCI Express on a NV41 chip and a good old AGP on the NV40 chip. The chips are moving out (of Taiwan) and the cards will be here in time to rival the ATI Radeon X800GT and GTO cards. The NVIDIA cards will be retail and OEM so if you're looking for 8 pipes (6800XT/ X800GT) or 12 (6800 Standard cards/ X800 GTO), the only hard part will be choosing which card you want.

In other news, The Inquirer informs us further that ATI has a September 24th launch date for it's Crossfire mobos. All this wonderful news evokes in me Ren and Stimpy's "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy" song (listen at your own risk).

Edit: The date is the 26th of September. A typo from the source...

ATI picture getting clearer

We posted yesterday about ATI's new line of graphic cards. If you just can't get enough then go over to Anandtech for some more gpu lovin'. You got pipes, shaders, core and memory clocks, power consumption, internal 512-bit ring bus memory controllers (that's a mouthful), and price figures all to make your head feel like you've just popped a pill (the red pill Neo).

Sorry no pics. Only techPowerUp does pics like noone else, but you already knew that. :D

Bloogle it

Google is one busy company. The first beta of their Google Blog Search is out and encourages you to "join the revolution" (see their FAQ). If you really want to know what the "people" have to say then just "Bloogle it".

Anyways, just click here for the Google Blog Search engine. I tried it out by putting techPowerUp and some of the results included the following: T3h 1337 b10g. Is this a good thing? I'll check out some blogs and see what's being said.

ASUS working on dual 7800GTX

ASUS did it for the 6800 Ultra and the 6800GT. Now they are working on a 7800GTX version of the board. It is basically a huge PCB with 2 GPUs & 2 times the memory on there. Too bad the 6800 based variants never made it to retail. Maybe this one will, if they can shrink it to fit normal PC cases. Would be interesting to see 2 of these boards working side by side, using bridgeless SLI. Yes, I know: "Dream on..."

Microsoft will "put the game back in Windows"

There might be a 4th competitor in the next-gen console marathon - the good old PC.

Not actualy a console, I agree. But a worthy opponent to PS3, Xbox360 and Nintendo Revolution, if we are to believe Microsoft group manager Chris Donohue who said: "We're putting the 'game' back in Windows (...) We're over the hump with Xbox 360 so now ready to build Windows as a platform".

Microsoft seems to realise that it has been killing PC gaming due to its lack of support for the platform.Furthermore they are launching a 18 month campaign where they will try to "put the game in Windows".

The company will promote cross-platform compatibility with peripherals that will work on both the Xbox 360 and the PC and game publishers jumping on the bandwagon to place the "Games for Windows" logo on PC games in much the same way as console games are currently branded.

So, the PC where it all began may not be dead yet.

X1800, X1600 and X1300

The Inquirer managed to get some informations on ATI's R520 codenamed Fudo.

ATI decided to call the R520 Radeon X1800, The Inquirer reported eralier.
Which means:

R520XT = X1800XT
R520PRO = X1800PRO
R520XL = X1800XL
...

Appearantly, someone at said the R520 is twice as good than X900, which was believed to be the new name for the R520

The mainstream card, based on an RV530 core, will be named Radeon X1600 and it will cost around $199.

The entry level RV515 is going to be called the Radeon X1300. This very affordable ATI cheapo card should land around $99 price mark.

ATI will finally offer wide range of Shader model 3.0, HDR and some nice video features for the whole family.

The cards will be launched in the first week of October.

MPAA and RIAA join Internet2

You know the old saying, "Keep your friends close, keep your enemies even closer."

Internet2 is a networking consortium of over 200 US universities working with industry and government to deploy "advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet."

Dan Glickman, president of MPAA said, "The movie industry is committed to
working with the technology sector to find innovative new ways to deliver
entertainment to consumers. The MPAA views this partnership with Internet2
as an important opportunity for collaboration as we seek to link new
delivery models with content protection. The MPAA and its member companies
have a wide-range of expertise in both areas, and I believe we can add a
positive, constructive perspective to the excellent work of Internet2."

Xbox 360 Security Top Priority

Microsoft said that the upcoming Xbox360 will have an extremely high level of security.

Obviously they learned from past mistakes.Xbox fans have been able to modd their consoles in the past with hard drive updates, mod chips and media-centre upgrades (just to name a few).

Knowing that, they decided to integrate advanced security directly into their new console's hardware.

"We've taken security to the hardware level and built it in from the ground up," said Chris Satchell from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group.

Despite mod-chips being made illegal in July of 2004, there are many who still find ways of modifying their consoles.

"There are going to be levels of security in this box that the hacker community has never seen before." continued the Xbox developer.

Personaly, I think it's nothing you (Xbox360 fans) should worry about.Nothing's impossible.

S3 has an answer to SLI and crossfire

Earlier S3 announced that they will make some high performance GPU's. Apparantly they even plan to let them work together just like SLI and Crossfire, they named it "Multi-G". Ofcourse S3 isn't known for making fast chips even though they tried it several times. So personally I'm a bit sceptic.
The way S3 will work this out is unknown as of yet. More information will most likely be released pretty soon since the Chrome S27 with Multi-G is to be released in Q4 this year.

S3 back in the mid-range graphics game?

S3 let a Hexus journalist into their labs to check out their new video chipset, the Chrome20.
Based on 90 nm technology and optimized for low power/low heat, things are looking good for the chipset. S3 says 'highest core clock of any GPU to date", and it will have 8 pixel shaders.

S3 wants to make this chipset affordable and compatible, so an average Joe could put it in his computer and play the newest games at reasonable framerates at average resolutions such as 1024x768 and 1280x1024. What is more intriguing is the idea of this becoming an integrated graphics solution, being able to play games on an average laptop!

Hasta la “Vista” Baby!!

I might just have said goodbye to Vista before even having said hello to it.

Like most new technologies, people ask themselves if they really need the latest cutting edge graphics card, motherboard, cpu, or in this case OS. Windows XP in all it's 32 bits is considered by many to be Microsoft's greatest OS ever, especially in terms of stability. I'm not saying it's perfect (there is always room for improvement), or that there aren't better or more stable OSes (Linux?) out there offered by other companies, but that XP compared to it's predecessors is incomparable.

So since it's late October 2001 release, most of us have been running our hardware wrapped in XP. If you had the latest in hardware at that time, then you probably had an ATI 8500 PRO or a GeForce3 TI 500. Your cpu was either an AMD Athlon XP processor 1900+, or a 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 Northwood sitting on a top notch slot A or 423 socket motherboard respectively. Things have sure come a long way since then - from 64 bit cpus to SLI and everything in between.

Blizzard won from BnetD

About a year ago Blizzard, who made games like Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft, decided to sue the makers of a program called BnetD. BnetD is a Battle.net server that allows people to host private multiplayer games. Though it's mainly used to host illegal Battle.net servers since they allow pirated copies of the supported games.
The programmers of BnetD did offer to block pirated copies but Blizzard denied this because they don't feel like giving their version checking algorithms away.
Unfortunately for the BnetD community Blizzard won so we most likely won't see ay new versions of BnetD anymore, not from the original makers at least.

GooOS

What if Google had an operating system up it's sleeve? Those are the rumours spreading across the web. Unfortunately, rumours they remain. Delicious looking rumours. How about this for eye candy?

And these:

R-Series RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRReady or not

The end of the 3rd quarter should see the first volume shipments of the R-series gpus (R520, RV530, RV515 and RV505 ) by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. The gpus, based on a 90nm technology, should result in a profitable 4th quarter for card manufacturers, unlike the first half of this year. If we are lucky, the sources at Digitimes are dead on with their information, and we can ask Santa for a new ATI card this Christmas.

Gabe Newell speaks about next gen game development...

Vista, Xbox 360, Playstation 3... these are the words that piss Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve Software, and other game developers off. Follow the link to find out why and post your own thoughts.

Personally, I can whole heartedly agree with Gabe. Consoles in this generation seem to have thought only about how to make the best hardware and not how to make the best games. In this way, they have totally alienated game developers and simply told them "hey, make games for our consoles or die!" while whipping them like egyptian slaves... Well, maybe not that severe, but you all catch my drift.

R520 XT @ 600MHz Core - 1400MHz DDR

According to reports, ATI has been working hard on improving yields on the R520. It seems their efforts have enabled them to clock the R520 XT to 600MHz core with 1400MHz GDDR3 memory in time for release. Whether or not they can churn out tens of thousands of cards at these speeds is yet to be seen, this card may be another phantom (X800 XT PE?). None the less, at these speeds even with only 16 pipelines, certain sources are saying that the card will be competitive with the 24 pipeline 7800 GTX.

With Nvidia putting paper launches to rest with the 7800 series, ATI is in a tough position where at this point, it can only dissapoint consumers by not having it's cards in stores by the time of announcement.

Microsoft DirectX 10 expectations

Microsoft finally decided to talk about DirectX and its next tenth generation. DirectX 10 will have completely new and faster dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and is supposed to run much faster. Microsoft will enable support for DX 9 or lower games through a software layer, meaning it might run slower. DirectX 10 will have support for Shader Model 4.0. It will come with Longhorn, but the expectations are that the Shader Model 4.0 might come even before the new Windows.

AIseek creates AI chip for games

While everyone spends his or her money on high end videocards and with the recent introduction of a physics chip the Israelian AIseek designed a chip to improve AI. The chip should handle AI about 1000 times as fast as a normal CPU would. It should be able to handle pathing and let bots make more use of the environment. It's even possible to have a simpler version on an USB stick. If this chip could truly make a difference for gamers or not is yet to be seen. We might find out if/when this product goes commercial.
Personally I'd say it would be better for server, think of MMO's.

Rollable display unveiled

Polymer Vision, a daughter company of Phillips, has announced that they will demonstrate a rollable screen at the IFA in Berlin sept 2-7. It's a 5" monochrome display that can show 320×240 pixels at once. Ofcourse the great thing about this is that when you roll it up it easily fits into your pocket. Additionally it consumes very little power.
Based on this screen the "Readius" was designed, a little device looking like a Startrek pad that easily fits in your pocket. This demonstrates that a rollable screen is indeed useful.
