Hilary Duff on Child Star Regrets, Canceled “Lizzie McGuire” Revival

“But I can’t look at my life and be like, ‘I wish this was different,’ because I don’t know if it would get me to where I am right now.”

Hilary Duff might be opening a new chapter of her career with the spinoff of How I Met Your Mother (called How I Met Your Father), but she’s also taking time to look back at her earlier roles and experiences.

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, Hilary discussed many of her new and past projects and also opened up about being a child actor, revealing that there are some things she feels like she missed out on from that time. While the actor admitted that she would still try to pursue being a child star if she were given the chance to start all over again and ultimately has no regrets, there are tiny things she has pondered and would change. “I wouldn't do it all exactly the same,” Hilary said. “But I can't look at my life and be like, ‘I wish this was different,’ because I don't know if it would get me to where I am right now. I wish I had a little bit of a better education. I wish I had a little bit of a college experience. But what would that look like? The thing that I crave out of it wouldn't look the way I pictured it because of who I am and how I came up.”

“It's weird to say ‘who I am to others,’ but it would be hard to erase that element to have a normal experience,” Hilary continued. “I feel smart, but there [are] certain things that people talk about where it literally isn't in my brain because I didn't experience it. I learned other things that people don't have a clue about. But I don't sit and harp on that.”

Of course, when speaking about her past, Hilary also took time to, once again, speak about the Disney+ Lizzie McGuire reboot, which was first announced in August 2019 and shelved in late 2020, after production had already started. Prior to the show’s cancelation, Hilary had already suggested some of the topics discussed might be deemed not family-friendly enough for Disney+. We also learned the pilot originally mentioned sex and cheating. Hilary reinforced these ideas during the new interview, discussing some of the reboot plot points openly. “My character was moving back home with her parents because she caught her soon-to-be fiancé cheating on her, and she was falling flat on her face at the moment and being like, ‘I need to pivot because everything that I thought was wasn't, and I'm turning 30. What the f*ck?’”

When asked if she ever felt tempted to leak the episode they did film or find a way to bring the reboot back, Hilary did not mince words. “I would be lying if I didn't say I didn't have those thoughts a few times. But I wouldn't, because in my 34 years I've realized that everything does happen for a reason." Hilary had previously said that “it would be a dream” if the reboot could be picked up by Hulu, but guess that ship has sailed. “There's a time and a place for everything,” she continued now. "It just wasn't her moment. I'm constantly asked about it still. All it does is breathe life into the fact that people still want it, and that's really sweet. It's not dead, and it's not alive.”

We'll always have the memories. And this iconic Gordo/Lizzie reunion at least:
