In a statement on their website, Vauxhall confirmed their decision.

They said: "Since 2011, Vauxhall have been very proud to be the lead sponsor for each of the four Home Nations football associations, the first time this has ever been undertaken by a major organisation.

“During this time, Vauxhall have enjoyed excellent relations with all the associations and the partnerships have proved extremely successful in delivering its original targeted strategic objectives.

“Vauxhall will now concentrate our marketing resources on communicating the wealth of new, innovative and technologically advanced models that will be launched over the coming months and years."

The company was recently bought over by French firm PSA - owners of Peugeot, Citroen and DS Automobiles.

But Vauxhall have denied the takeover has anything to do with this decision to end the long partnership.

A spokeswoman told the Daily Record: "Part of the idea was to connect with our consumers across the UK.

"We were part of the fabric of Britain.

"Discussions had been going on for a long time - long before PSA - and they had been led by Opel/Vauxhall.

"We have been sponsors for seven years and had a good relationship and now it is time to focus on other marketing priorities."
