1 Blue Mystery Snail (Pomacea BridGesii)

The Blue Mystery Snail is a great snail for many reasons.  These snails have a large appetite and will gladly clean up any leftover food in an aquarium. They can actually break down food much quicker than shrimp through digestion. This is why we believe that snail waste is actually beneficial to a shrimp’s diet. Therefore, these snails are providing clean-up and eventually natural food.

When Receiving Snails:

  1. Place the snails in a specific corner of the tank and make a note of where you placed them
  2. Watch the snails over a 1 week period, if they do not move remove them from the aquarium
  3. Give the snails a smell - if they stink, they are dead
  4. If they do not smell, add them back to the aquarium and give it another 3 days
  5. It is super common for snails to burrow into the substrate and disappear from sight (especially Assassin Snails)

Blue Mystery Snails

Mystery snails are perfect for a shrimp tank or non-aggressive fish in your community tank. They feed on aquarium algae in freshwater aquariums.  Mystery snails have become a popular tank inhabitant in recent years. Their ease of breeding and hardy nature makes them an easy choice to keep in a community tank.

Blue Mystery Snail Behavior

The Blue Mystery Snail is completely peaceful and will not harm any other tank inhabitants.

Blue Mystery Snail Care

Your mystery snail aquarium should be filtered, and fully cycled. The snails don't have any specific demands when it comes to décor. They appear to naturally inhabit waters with a sandy substrate where they can hide and wait for food or algae, but aquarists have found they do just fine on gravel as well.

Buying Mystery Snails

Mystery snails come in various colors. The Shrimp Farm currently offers blue, gold, ivory, jade, purple, and albino mystery snails.  We also have a 3 pack of assorted mystery snails (found here) for color variety.  Hobbyists enjoy having these mystery snails in their tanks for the benefits they provide.  They will clean the tank from algae and then will help keep the tank water parameters adequate by providing a healthy bioload.

2.5 - 3+ inches (5 - 7.6+ cm)

How many Blue Mystery snails can I keep per gallon?

A reasonable load would be 3 snails per gallon. If they are kept well-fed, there should be no issue in keeping them. Doing normal water changes is recommended.

How long does a Blue Mystery snail live?

~ 1 year

Are Blue Mystery Snails easy to Breed?

Yes.  Blue Mystery Snails will mate without help or any altered tank conditions. The female lays eggs masses above the surface of the water and leaves them in a cocoon for them to spot the eggs easily. In the wild, this remarkable strategy protects their eggs against predation by fish and other water inhabitants.

What is the diet of the Blue Mystery snail?

One important aspect of keeping your mystery snail healthy is a proper diet. Although these snails will usually adapt to eating plant-based dry foods, the best staple for them is all-natural algae and biofilm. They are fantastic algae eaters but won't attempt to consume your plants, which makes them a great addition to your aquarium cleaning crew. As discussed earlier, be sure to cultivate some food for them, and don't keep your tank overly clean.

If you are low on algae or just want to offer some extra variety, high-quality shrimp foods are a good option for your mystery snails. They usually contain plenty of algae, plant matter, and calcium, which is important for shell growth. If your pH is on the low side, consider adding an extra mineral source - montmorillonite powder helps with shrimp molts, so it might be beneficial for your mystery snails as well.

What are the best tankmates for Mystery snails?

If you're here at The Shrimp Farm reading this snail care guide, you're probably interested in both shrimp and snails. You're in luck - they are the perfect combo! Both mystery snails (and other snails) and (dwarf) shrimp are very peaceful. Shrimp especially won't do well with larger and more aggressive tankmates, so these harmless snails are a great choice if you want to add some extra life to your shrimp tank. You can also keep them with one or more of the various other fascinating snail species the aquarium hobby has to offer.

If you want to keep your mystery snails with fish, be sure to go for species that won't nip at their antennae.

What is the best way to Acclimate my new Blue Mystery snail?

When adding new tankmates to your already existing tank, it is important to take the proper steps in introducing and acclimating them into their new home. The whole process is extremely stressful for the snail. Acclimation is important for snails as it allows them time to adjust to the temperature and parameters of their new environment. By doing this correctly, you will reduce the chances of shock or death of your new snails.
