Superbike star Shane Byrne ‘in good spirits’ after surgery following brutal crash
Shakey suffered a fracture to his back plus several other injuries during a test session in Norfolk last week
SUPERBIKE champion Shane Byrne is “alert and in good spirits” after undergoing surgery following a brutal crash during a test session.
Shakey, from the Isle of Sheppey, has been in intensive care after suffering a number of injuries and a fracture to his back last Thursday in Norfolk.
The incident happened as he prepared for the Bennetts Superbike Championship and he was rushed to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
But his family released a statement on the 41-year-old’s condition earlier, which said: "Shane is alert and in good spirits, but there is still a long road ahead in the recovery process.
"He will remain under close observation in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Critical Care Complex for the next few days before undergoing further treatment."
The championship’s Twitter page had earlier stated that he was being monitored for various injuries.
It said a surgical procedure would be needed to stabilise his spinal fractures, and that he would receive further treatment for his other injuries after that.
Last night his wife Petra updated her Instagram followers on her husband’s condition.

She said: "First time I smiled since Thursday. Operation went well and spine is safe.
"Now to concentrate on long recovery and fix broken neck and breast bone, and pretty much all his ribs. He is expected to have painful few days. Thank you for all the messages."
