Glide to the top of the escalators at Canary Wharf Tube station and you will find a changed landscape. First, it feels empty. It isn’t, of course; street vendors are still selling rice boxes and pistachio-flavoured doughnuts, the shopping centre is open and office workers are trickling back, if only twice a week, but the rush hour scramble of suits already seems a thing of the past.

As if to underline this change, to the right of the station exit, an office building is being gutted from the inside out. It is the former headquarters of Thomson Reuters, with its famous news ticker that runs along the outside, which dates back to the first rejuvenation of the estate in 1991.
