Russell Brand joked that he would choose a Christian church to join at random by pulling petals off a flower weeks before his baptism in the Thames.

The actor has insisted that his introduction to the Christian faith on Sunday was “undertaken in gratitude and sincerity”, though he conceded that “a lot of people are maybe surprised”.

Brand, 48, who has been accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse by four women, has said he saw his baptism as “an opportunity to leave the past behind” and “leave behind the sins”.

He has denied the allegations against him, which emerged out of a joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.
