If you’re after some good autumn hair inspo, look no further than Katie Holmes, who just stepped out in New York City with a fresh new haircut. Entering autumn–as evidenced by the rainy scene–with a new set of curtain bangs, Holmes’s chic new look takes its cues from some of our French-girl favorites like Jane Birkin and make-up artist Violette Serrat.

Holmes’s effortless new style featured an eyebrow-skimming curtain fringe in her signature lengths. Cut to feel lived-in and loose, she hit the corner shop, hair unstyled, with umbrella in tow.

A fringe like this is an easy way to add detail to an otherwise simple haircut and, as Holmes proves, if it’s cut well, you can leave it to air dry and still look great. It also lends easy detail to a low-maintenance ponytail or bun. And, while the French contingent may lead you to believe their hair is wholly low-maintenance, it still requires some upkeep. Hairstylist Larry King previously told Vogue that it’s key to have a fringe like this trimmed regularly to maintain the shape.

Holmes joins Naomi Campbell in adopting a fringe this week. Autumn is perhaps the easiest time of year to experiment with face-framing detail–mostly because it’s cool enough to avoid forehead-sticking, and warm enough that hats aren’t yet required. Considering it? Take this as your sign to take the plunge and get the fringe.
