CHARLESTON — One of the most accomplished musicians in her field, Alison Krauss will bring her unique bluegrass sound to West Virginia in June.
Krauss is celebrating her latest solo album, “Windy City,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country albums and Top Bluegrass Album charts, in addition to receiving two Grammy nominations.
The album was produced by the legend Buddy Cannon, “whose vocal harmonies Krauss grew up listening to and were the soundtrack to her childhood,” officials said.
Krauss said that at the time, “Buddy sang harmonies on everything.”
“I don’t do something unless I feel like I’m called to do it. That’s what I felt like, so I honored it,” Krauss continued. “It’s like the same feeling of when you know something is right musically, with a song or a batch of songs — the same feeling, but this was attached to a person instead of a batch of songs.”
Krauss, who is an Illinois native, is now considered one of the most accomplished singers and musicians in her genres. While the country artist grew up listening to everything from folk to opera to pop to rock, she fell in love with bluegrass at the age of 5 years old, when she first picked up her fiddle.
“Shortly after, Krauss began entering fiddle contests,” officials said. “At the age of 14, Rounder Records signed her to her first record deal and she went on to release her debut solo album two years later.”
The accomplished bluegrass musician became a member of the Grand Ole Opry at age 21. She was inducted by Garth Brooks, and was one of the youngest members to be inducted.
Since 1985, Krauss has released 14 different albums. That includes “seven with her longtime band and musical collaborators Union Station, and the Robert Plant collaboration Raising Sand, which was certified platinum and won five Grammys, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.”
The concert will be at 8 p.m. June 12 at the Charleston Municipal Auditorium. Tickets range from $94-$438.
The singer is also known for having lent her voice to the popular movie “O Brother Where Art Thou?” along with famed folk singers John Hartford, Emmylou Harris, Union Station member Dan Tyminski and more.
The soundtrack became a best seller, and has been certified eight-time platinum. In addition, it won Album of the Year at the Country Music Association awards, and two international bluegrass music awards: Album of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year, for Krauss and Gillian Welch’s song, “I’ll Fly Away.”
Krauss has gone on to sell more than 12 million records, and is the most awarded living Grammy winner. When she won her first Grammy in 1991, she was the second-youngest recipient ever. In her career, she has collaborated with everyone from Taylor Swift to Yo-Yo-Ma to Cyndi Lauper to Willie Nelson.
“Her honors include 27 Grammys, nine Country Music Association awards, 14 International Bluegrass Music Association awards, two Academy of Country Music awards and two Gospel Music Association awards,” officials said.
