New York

New York is the most southerly state of the New England region on the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a border with the provinces Ontario and Quebec of Canada.

Date first visited by Europeans: The first Europeans in New York were French colonialists and Jesuit priests, coming down from Canada

Date admitted to US: One of the thirteen original colonies

Capital: Albany

Largest City: New York City

Terrain: New York lies between Long Island Sound and the Great Lakes. Apart from New York City, the geography of New York is dominated by the Allegheny Mountains and the bodies of water around it.

The Hudson River and the Appalachian Mountains run through it. Its large natural harbor was (after the Erie Canal was dug) the gateway to the Mississippi River System and to the heart of the North American continent.

On September 11, 2001, two hijacked airplanes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, killing an estimated 2,753 people, including those on the airplanes.

New York State contains of New York City, the largest metropolitan area in the United States, home to many large corporations and powerful financial institutions. It has been called the “financial and cultural capital of the world.”

The city has the headquarters of the United Nations. The city is also known for business and tourism, and hosted nearly 60 million tourists in 2015 alone.
