2006 Volvo V70 R Is a Sleeper the Whole Family Will Love

Classics, European  /   /  By Jim Travers

The term “sleeper,” when used in the automotive world, refers to a car with a ton of performance that you wouldn’t expect by looking at its exterior. By that definition, the 2006 Volvo V70 R Wagon recently offered on eBay could be the ultimate sleeper.

Based on Volvo’s robust if unexciting V70 wagon, R versions were treated to a host of transformative powertrain and suspension upgrades, along with subtle trim modifications. The mods are invisible to nearly everyone except the most devoted Volvo enthusiast. A little stealth goes a long way. Car & Driver ranked the V70 R as one of the sportiest, coolest Volvos of all time.

Power and Handling in a Wagon?

Don’t let the understated Volvo V70 R fool you. R models went through extensive factory modification. The changes turned an unassuming family transporter into a canyon-carving, stoplight drag-racing champ. The civilized wagon can shave valuable seconds off trips to the grocery store.

Under the hood, the V70 R got a 2.5-liter, turbocharged five-cylinder engine good for 300 horsepower. Buyers could choose the automatic transmission or the more desirable and rarer six-speed manual chosen by the original owner of this example. The standard Haldex all-wheel-drive system helps get all that power to the ground. Period reports said the Volvo V70 R was good for a zero-to-60 time of 5.9 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

Other upgrades included larger Brembo disc brakes all around, along with oversized performance tires on 16-inch alloy rims. An electronically adjustable suspension was part of the package. Drivers can choose from three settings depending on driving style and conditions.

Luxury, Swedish Style

In spite of the performance focus, Volvo didn’t scrimp on passenger comfort. This V70 R is loaded with leather sport seats, a sunroof, air conditioning, cruise control, an aftermarket JVC audio system, and power seats, windows, and locks.

Volvo left few exterior clues about the Volvo V70 R’s performance capability. There are no loud stripes, flares, or scoops. Volvo limited the trim changes to a unique front bumper with large air intakes, and subtle “R” badging front and rear.

With just over 80,000 miles, this is an exceptionally clean performance wagon. The sale is complete with copies of all maintenance and repair receipts. Recent work includes a new timing belt, front struts, and new tires and brakes. The original, leather-bound owner’s manual comes with the car.

Exterior and interior photos back up the seller’s claims. The silver paint gleams like new, with no dents or other damage. The rich-looking blue leather interior is free of rips or tears, and the carpeted cargo area is just as tidy and well preserved. A dog barrier is fitted to help keep everything looking that way.

With only 3,400 examples built over a four-year run, it would be hard to find another V70 R in similar condition. Its manual transmission makes it all the more unusual. Values are on the rise, making the $21,000 asking price especially appealing.
