Flat Iron area in Manhattan

This is the Flat Iron area in 1900 (Broadway and Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street). Photographer: Robert L. Bracklow (1849-1919). Source: New-York Historical Society. Enlargement of shops and office below.

The construction of the famous Flatiron building started the following year, in 1901. The Sohmer Piano Building at 170 5th Avenue, corner of Wes 22nd Street, with a two-story octagonal cupola, was completed about 1898. The Cumberland House, old St. Germain Hotel, is on the left, at 22nd Street.
