Incredibly rare Junkers Ju 87 cockpit mounted, manual fuel priming pump

To start the Jumo series engine, the JU 87 pilot would open the fuel cocks to both tanks and give a few pumps to the dash mounted fuel primer pump whilst switching on the fuel booster pumps and setting the throttle to the ‘1’ notch.

After switching on both ignition magnetos which energised the inertia starter and booster coil before pushing down on the clutch handle to his lower left for 10 seconds before pulling it up again until the engine fired.

With some of its original yellow paintwork still intact on the plunger face, this Junkers JU 87 manually operated Fuel Primer Pump was mounted on the far right of the pilot's main flying panel.

Across its face, the Fuel Plunger bears the letters: ‘AP’ above the letters: ‘SUM’.

Like the pumps main body, the Plunger knob is manufactured from Electron Magnesium which is highly susceptible to oxidisation and corrosion pitting.

Even with the surface corrosion, the serial number: Nr8-4505A can still be seen on the Pump’s main body although the original brass spigots, nuts and washers are still in good condition.

In order to conserve weight, many Luftwaffe aircraft components were manufactured from Electron Magnesium such as rudder pedals, fuel caps, switch block housings and mechanical linkages. These were all quickly consumed by the fire of a crash landing, which is why they are so rare to come by and highly sought after.

Mounted on its 100 yr old Mango Wood stand with a highly detailed hand-crafted and airbrushed model of the iconic German dive bomber - the Junkers 87 ’Stuka’ perched above on its removable magnetic display arm, plus an informative Fact Sheet, this would make an extraordinary and highly valued, original memento of WWII Luftwaffe air power for any aviation enthusiast.
