Argyria is a condition caused by excessive exposure to silver, either through ingestion or contact. It results in a blue-gray discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and eyes due to the deposition of silver in the body's tissues. Symptoms are exacerbated when sunlight oxidizes the deposited silver. The discoloration is usually permanent and can resemble an "all over tattoo". Diagnosis involves fluorescent x-ray examination, skin biopsy, or medical history. While there is no genetic predisposition, factors like low vitamin E or selenium levels may contribute. Outcomes are typically irreversible, though hydroquinone lotions or laser treatments can help remove pigmented skin cells in some cases.
