Viral Video | Previously unseen footage from 1958 shows what happens when a nuclear bomb detonates underwater. The remastered video, now viral on social media, shows a spray dome rising 840 feet into the sky after an astonishing explosion in the open ocean near Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. According to the Nuclear Weapons Archive, the explosion, dubbed the “Wahoo blast”, occurred on May 16, 1958 at a depth of 500 feet. The spray grew to a diameter of an astonishing 38,000 feet, even as the 9 kolotons of TNT was a squeaker compared to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings.
